Sammons Jazz

Sammons Jazz is the most widely recognized jazz performance series in North Texas. Since 1989, the series has presented a who’s who of local jazz legends and rising stars, more than 1,000 artists, and counting. Jazz fans can enjoy all styles of jazz, from big band and bebop to swing and Latin.

The concerts are held on the first Wednesday of each month, February through May and September through December. Given the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, this schedule is subject to change.

AUTUMN COLORS

Wednesday, September 6

We’re starting the fall off right with the wonderful guitar act Sam Walker Plays Barney Kessel. Guitarist Sam Walker brings his group to the stage with an exciting music tribute to the famed Barney Kessel. His group features David Williams on tenor sax, Kyp Green on bass, and Joe Carpenter on drums.

We turn a jazz leaf to Cuba with Carlos Averhoff Jr. & Together Afro-Cuban Sextet as native Cuban saxophonist & composer Carlos Averhoff Jr. brings his afro-cuban sound to Sammons Jazz. He is joined with Daniel Matthews on trumpet, Daniel Batista on bass, Christan Valdes on piano, Mauricio Upmann on congas, and Luis Gonzalez on drums.

STRIKE UP THE BANDS

Trenton Hull Quintet swings into the evening with a clear resonant timbre. As one of DFW’s talented young vocalists Trent Hull is joined by Shelley Carrol on sax & woodwinds, Robert Trusko on bass, Peter Rioux on piano, and Brian Harmon on drums.

Jason Davis & The Dallas Jazz Collective brings one of the young texas tenors of our day to the stage with his upbeat sax-led ensemble. Saxophonist Jason Davis is joined by Peter Rioux on piano, Brian Harmon on drums, Jonathan Fisher on bass, Gaika James on trombone, Lee Williams on trumpet.

SWINGIN’ IT ACCORDINGLY

Wednesday, November 1

Ginny Mac spotlights the talented Ginny Mac on accordion, piano, and vocals playing hot jazz and other genres. Ginny’s band features Glenn McLaughlin on guitar & vocals, Steve Barnes on drums, and Nathan Phelps on bass.

The Davy Mooney Quartet closes the evening with cool and clever jazz guitar-centered stylings. His group features Davy Mooney on guitar, Quincy Davis on drums, Ben Bohoroqez on sax, and June Lee on piano.

ARTISTIC DIRECTOR’S CONCERT

Wednesday, December 6

Sammons Jazz Artistic Director and Steinway Artist Arlington Jones presents a “fathers & sons show” spotlighting the legacy of fathers and sons in music. This show features fathers with their sons, Arlington Jones on piano, Arlington “Ollie” Jones III on drums, James Driscoll on bass, and special guests: saxophonist Tom Braxton with Ian & Julian Braxton on saxophones, Mark & Stephen Harper on guitars, Eric Willis on piano, and Josh Willis on drums.

The second set continues the legacy theme with Arlington Jones & The Brethren playing music from Arlington’s recorded catalog revealing the history of his life. It features James Driscoll on bass, Arlington “Ollie” Jones III on drums, and Jorge Ginorio on percussion.
