Rough Magic | 5Rhythms Ritual Dance + Theatre Lab with Lorca Simons

May 11 @ 11:00 am

$150 – $200

Join us for a day devoted to the healing power of expression.

Hosted at the historic Hip Pocket Theatre, this deeply rooted exploration of embodied poetry + creative investigation will take place under a vast open Texas sky.

“An eruption of soul straight from the heart, fueling your spirit & ripping edges wide. The magic of theatre begins here.” — Lorca Simons

No experience required, all bodies + voices are welcome.

Come expand your imagination, magnify your curiosity and illuminate your breath in the beat.

Awaken and sharpen those places in yourself that need rewiring, recharging and realigning back to what is most original and true.

Let’s dance, utilizing the poetry of the body as our spring board for theatrical expression. Illuminate language, uncover gesture and free the mind, expanding into an ensemble of limitless possibility.
In response to Gabrielle Roth’s investigation into what it means to be an authentic human being, Lorca is dedicated to the creation of physical theatre that is both interactive and transformative. Offering labs rooted in a visionary and rigorous technique for people to become true “athletes of the heart.” Live Wire ritual theatre expands the imagination through curiosity, breath, physical gesture and space. Performance art in the raw, rooted in the real.

Curiosity. Commitment. Soul.

We will meet you there. — Lorca Simons

– This is a substance-free event.

ABOUT LORCA SIMONS | Lorca is a certified 5Rhythms facilitator dedicated to the creation of physical theatre that is both interactive and transformative.

She was born and raised in Texas where she grew up in her father’s experimental theatre company Hip Pocket Theatre. As Producing Artistic Director she has been involved in the creation of original works for 47 years. A graduate of The University of North Carolina School of the Arts theatre conservatory. Educated in both experimental and traditional theatre. She has blazed through productions in New York City from Off Broadway to fringe, as well as television and film.

Lorca followed her instincts to the unique directing vibration known as Gabrielle Roth and a 19 year creative collaboration bloomed. She studied and trained with Gabrielle from the mid-90’s and was a co-founder and a co-director of 5RT, the experimental theatre wing of the 5Rhythms world, a place she stepped into with her expansive Texan feet, collaborating on numerous original productions and international workshops. In response to Gabrielle Roth’s investigation into what it means to be an authentic human being Lorca created Live Wire 5Rhythms Theatre which is dedicated to the creation of physical theater that is both interactive and transformative. Live Wire labs: Breath in Motion, Roots, Electric Landscapes, Silhouette, Wing Span, Soul Threading, On The Verge and Soul Revival are rooted in a visionary and rigorous technique for people to become true “athletes of the heart” exploring and investigating the depths of the human spirit.

She is committed to scattering the seeds of this transformative process.

ABOUT HIP POCKET THEATRE |
Magical. Raw. Beautiful Texas Grit.
Hip Pocket Theatre opens its historic gates to host + hold this deeply rooted exploration of embodied poetry + creative investigation under a vast open sky.

Hip Pocket Theatre, as both experimental playhouse and environmental visual installation, has a long-standing outreach program comprising community based events and enriching healing arts programming. It is dedicated now, as always, to bringing guest artists from around the globe and throughout Fort Worth to collaborate on projects each season.

Hip Pocket Theatre has been a vital part of the performing arts in Texas since 1976, when founders Johnny Simons, Diane Simons, and Douglas Balentine first staged their interdisciplinary plays under the stars in Fort Worth. Since its founding, the theater has grown its global reach and capacity for genre-defying programming, while staying true to the bold, playful, and magical.

Hip Pocket incorporates dance, mime, music, masks, and puppetry to create a universal language that can tell stories at once childlike and urgent. The scripts, the stage, and the performers at Hip Pocket build on a lexicon unique to its pioneering roots, and each performance is an homage to what it means to create a space for theater.

Hip Pocket honors the new vision of each artistic generation as an unfolding of time. Johnny and Diane’s daughters, Lorca and Lake, now carry the theater’s vision forward with their new directorship. They embody Hip Pocket’s evolving vocabulary of storytelling and movement, and as veteran creators for its stage, look to expand its legacy of original, boundary-bending works. As Lorca and Lake bring with them lifelong careers and experience in the arts, they conscientiously seek to prioritize the theater’s accessibility, inclusivity, and international reach.
